Opis Gatunku
Mak wschodni osiąga wysokość 80-90 cm. Łodygi i liście są sztywno owłosione. Liście, które pojawiają się bardzo wcześnie wiosną są pierzastodzielne, zebrane w okazałe rozety. Mniejsze liście są osadzone na łodygach zwieńczonych bardzo dekoracyjnym pojedynczym kwiatem. W zależności od odmiany kwiaty mogą być białe, różowe, czerwone o średnicy do 15 cm z czarnym środkiem. Roślina kwitnie w maju i w czerwcu. Po przekwitnięciu ginie część nadziemna rośliny, stąd przy jej sadzeniu należy pamiętać o sąsiedztwie innych roślin, które winny zakryć powstałe luki. Mak wschodni nadaje się do wysadzania na rabatach w grupach. Można wykorzystać go również jako kwiat cięty. Należy do wyjątkowo dekoracyjnych, jest jednak nietrwały. Aby przedłużyć jego trwałość w wazonie, ścinamy go w pąkach, gdy zaczynają pękać działki kielicha. Po ścięciu końce łodyg zanurzamy na kilka minut w gorącej wodzie. Torebki nasienne - makówki można wykorzystać na suche bukiety. Maki wymagają słonecznych stanowisk oraz gleb suchych do średnio wilgotnych, dobrze zdrenowanych, lekkich i żyznych. Nie tolerują mokrych miejsc ani ciężkiej gleby, gdyż w takich warunkach gniją ich grube, palowe korzenie.
